Too young? Too old?
Age definitely causes controversy within the fashion, film and media industry. One particular shoot that I can remember is the Corrinne Day shoot from 1993, featuring Kate Moss. It caused uproar because she looked so young and it glamourised the 'heroin-chic' fad that was becoming prevalent at that time. Calvin Klein caused even more of a stir by featuring Kate Moss in his campaigns looking equally as young but behaving in quite a provocative way. I find the fact that there is a shelf life on most models because of their age, aren't older men/women equally as beautiful? The only things they tend to advertise are anti-wrinkle creams or life insurance. I would definitely love to see some Fabulous Fahionista's on our glossy covers and billboards. Certain brands like Illamasqua and Vivienne Westwood definitely embrace the older model in a flattering way within their campaigns, we need to see more of this. Another controversial advert recently is the new Burberry campaign featuring Romeo one of the Beckhams offspring. Again it portrays him in a way that maybe he shouldn't be seen for his age. Within my research I originally wanted to use an older model for one of my shoots, the particular lady I was going to use was unavailable so I had to completely re-think my idea, it wouldn't of worked with anyone else. I'm covering quite a lot of other diversity so I decided not to use age in the end. I have put together some images I was looking at of both young and old that I find inspiring (my younger models are more how I see a child, not how the media sometimes portrays them).
